Numbers 2

The Order of the Tribes

(1) The LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying,

(2) "Every man of the children of Israel shall camp by his own banner, with the flag of their father’s house; far away from the tabernacle of the congregation they shall camp.

(3) On the east side toward the rising of the sun shall those of the banner of the camp of Judah make camp according to their armies; and Nahshon the son of Amminadab shall be captain of the children of Judah.

(4) And his army, and those who were numbered of them, were 74,600.

Tribe of Issachar

(5) Those who camp next to him shall be the tribe of Issachar, and Nethaneel the son of Zuar shall be leader of the children of Issachar.

(6) And his army, and those who were numbered in it, were 54,400.

Tribe of Zebulun

(7) Then the tribe of Zebulun, and Eliab the son of Helon shall be leader of the children of Zebulun.

(8) And his army, and those who were numbered in it, were 57,400.

(9) All who were numbered in the camp of Judah were 186,400, throughout their armies. These shall set out first.

Camp of Reuben

(10) On the south side shall be the standard of the camp of Reuben according to their armies; and the leader of the children of Reuben shall be Elizur the son of Shedeur.

(11) And his army, and those who were numbered in it, were 46,500.

Tribe of Simeon

(12) Those who camp by him shall be the tribe of Simeon, and the leader of the children of Simeon shall be Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai.

(15) And his army, and those who were numbered of them, were 45,650.

(16) All who were numbered in the camp of Reuben were 151,450, throughout their armies. And they shall set out second.

Camp of Levites

(17) Then the tabernacle of the congregation shall set out with the camp of the Levites in the middle of the camps; as they camp, so shall they set out, every man in his place by their standards.

Camp of Ephraim

(18) On the west side shall be the standard of the camp of Ephraim according to their armies; and the leader of the sons of Ephraim shall be Elishama the son of Ammihud.

(19) And his army, and those who were numbered of them, were 40,500.

Tribe of Manasseh

(20) And by him shall be the tribe of Manasseh; and the leader of the children of Manasseh shall be Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur.

(21) His army, and those who were numbered of them, were 32,200.

(26) His army, and those who were numbered of them, were 62,700.

Tribe of Asher

(27) Those who camp by him shall be the tribe of Asher; and the leader of the children of Asher shall be Pagiel the son of Ocran.

(28) His army, and those who were numbered of them, were 41,500.

Tribe of Naphtali

(29) Then the tribe of Naphtali: and the captain of the children of Naphtali shall be Ahira the son of Enan.

(30) And his army, and those who were numbered of them, were 53,400.

(31) All those who were numbered in the camp of Dan were 157,600. They shall go last with their standards."

Levites Were Not Numbered

(32) These are those who were numbered of the children of Israel by the house of their fathers; all those who were numbered of the camps throughout their armies were 603,550.

(33) But the Levites were not numbered among the children of Israel; as the LORD commanded Moses.

(34) Thus the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses; so they camped by their standards, and so they set out, every one after their families, according to the house of their fathers.
